USA - Jewels of the Craft

Catégorie: Franc-maçonnerie » Loges et Groupes de recherche - Instituts de recherches » Loges et Groupes de recherche
Description:
From time to time one will see the occasional Masonic medal or jewel which has left Masonic hands for some reason or another, at collector's fairs, flea markets and antique shops. These are usually purchased by collectors and are often offered back to the original Lodges.
Collecting jewels has a fascinating interest, which leads to a greater awareness of the role of jewels and their history, relative to the individual bodies in Freemasonry.
The JEWELS of the CRAFT (JOTC) was formed in 1990 by a number of Masons with a common interest in Masonic Jewels. To assist individual collectors, members receive a quarterly informative journal entitled "The Diadem" accompanied by a list of jewels for sale or exchange by our members. The members also meet twice yearly at Birmingham (see Meetings).

USA - South Dakota Lodge of Masonic Research

Catégorie: Franc-maçonnerie » Loges et Groupes de recherche - Instituts de recherches » Loges et Groupes de recherche
Description:
MASONIC RESEARCH IN SOUTH DAKOTA
by Richard M. Luther, PGM

(South Dakota Lodge of Masonic Research)

Often we see the words "Masonic Research" and equally as often we feel inadequate as to what it means to we as Master Masons. What it is can be simply put. As Masons became curious about the organization of Masonry they looked into and investigated a number of areas(Topics) of Masonic subjects. Topics were thoroughly explored by Masons who were not necessarily expert writers with the end product becoming recorded information that was not only interesting to read but contributed greatly to the "light" every Mason was charged to search for.

Through the efforts of Most Worshipful Brother Herman F. Chapman, Past Grand Master of South Dakota(1937-38) Volume one, titled Masonic Papers, was published. This volume (still available) was chock full of Masonic topics. Brother Chapman spoke of how this publication came about, "When formal organization was finally accomplished, crisis followed crisis; indecision followed seas of calm; inexperience plagued; but as we are taught, time, patience and perseverance will and did accomplish all things." His philosophy still serves as a template for Freemasonry.

The South Dakota Lodge of Masonic Research(SDLMR) was granted a charter by the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of South Dakota on June 11, 1952 in Sioux Falls by Grand Master Roger S. Brown and his elected officers, including Elvin F. Strain, Grand Secretary, all of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge A.F. & A. M. of South Dakota. Since this writer was well acquainted with these officers it seems appropriate to share a bit of the early philosophy that accompanied the formation of SDLMR.

What prompted the formation of SDLMR? As the written history shows, it was in the late 1930’s and through the 1940’s that Masons who associated with each other at Grand Lodge and had something in common other than love for the Fraternity. Each shared a certain curiosity about the facts that were coming to light such as: the early Lodge(U.D.) at Fort Randall, the Masonic leaders in territorial times; the development of ritual used in Lodges and friendships with Masonic leaders in Iowa and North Dakota. These subjects aroused an interest in Dakota Masonry and were intensively studied and later recorded as research papers in Masonic Papers.

Is SDLMR treated as a constituent Lodge? Yes, in many respects SDLMR performs most of the same functions(except conferral of degrees) as a constituent Lodge in South Dakota. By-Laws were developed and approved by the Grand Lodge. There are some differences, however. SDLMR meets only twice a year, June(at Grand Lodge) and in the fall. The officers as well as their duties parallel those of constituent Lodges. Committees are numerous. A publication, which emanates from the SDLMR four to six times annually is called The Bulletin. It is edited, prepared and assembled by Worshipful Brother Keith Walker, a dedicated Mason and researcher/writer of Masonic subjects. The dues of SDLMR are only $5.00 per year. Life memberships are available. These receipts are used for postage and for printing and mailing of The Bulletin. David Graham served as the first editor of The Bulletin.

The 1999 - 2000 SDLMR elected officers are: Worshipful Master, Milo D. Dailey IV; Senior Warden, Walter Mundstock; Junior Warden, Kenneth L. Glaser; Secretary, Richard M. Luther; and Treasurer, George Shotwell). The Publications Committee includes Harlan Peterson, Douglas Mc Farland and John Sweaney.

Which is needed the most, old members to pay dues, new members or "writer" members? Truthfully, all are necessary to support the functions of SDLMR. The present policy is "once a member(by petition) one can, as many have, "drop out" for a while and then become a current member by paying his dues for the current year". Writers are needed to keep The Bulletin and Masonic Papers well and healthy. The Bulletin is not a newsletter type, but contains researched articles about Freemasonry. BE A MEMBER! BE A WRITER!

Can any Mason in "good standing" be a member and contributor? Very definitely. SDLMR currently has purged its membership(those not paying annual dues regularly) recently according to Postal Service requirements and most assuredly, a Mason can renew or be a new member(by application). SDLMR Secretary, Richard M. Luther, 124 Gilley Avenue S., Brookings, SD 57006: Phone 605-697-7444: e-mail, richlu@brookings.net will be glad to assist.

USA - The Pennsylvania Lodge of Research

Catégorie: Franc-maçonnerie » Loges et Groupes de recherche - Instituts de recherches » Loges et Groupes de recherche
Description:
The Pennsylvania Lodge of Research is a unique occurrence in the history of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, as this is the first Lodge constituted within our Jurisdiction solely for the purpose of Masonic study.

Although warranted by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, this Lodge will work differently than any other Lodge within the jurisdiction. This Lodge's membership is divided into three categories: Full Member, Associate Member, and Fellow.

Full membership is extended to those who are members in good standing of a symbolic Lodge, constituted under the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Associate membership is extended to Brethren who are members of a Lodge outside our Jurisdiction, which is recognized by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Fellows are distinguished members, elected for their outstanding scholarship.

The Pennsylvania Lodge of Research will hold only two Stated Meetings each year, with Special Meetings to be held at the discretion of the Worshipful Master. Meetings will be held at various Masonic sites throughout the Commonwealth.

No Craft Degrees will be conferred. The elected Worshipful Master will not receive "the Word of the Chair," nor will he become a voting member of the Grand Lodge. Membership in the Pennsylvania Lodge of Research will not constitute dual membership.

USA - The Ohio Lodge of Research

Catégorie: Franc-maçonnerie » Loges et Groupes de recherche - Instituts de recherches » Loges et Groupes de recherche
Description:
In the mid-1950s a handful of masons interested in studying the various aspects of Freemasonry started the Cincinnati Masonic Study Club. It did not have dues or any officers other than a secretary. When funds were needed, the members "shelled out" in amounts sufficient for the expenditure. The speaker on all occasions was a member, who read a prepared paper on a subject of masonic interest. The speaker then served as moderator for the following meeting. The by-laws stated that "[t]here shall be twelve members (active) and no more." As a condition of membership, one was required to "prepare a paper, typed, double spaced with three copies, on some phase of Masonry as directed by the Club, or some subject of his own selection with the approval of the Study Club."
The Club suffered its ups and downs, and when at the meeting of April 6, 1961 only four members were present, no paper was given but a lot of soul searching took place. At the following meeting on May 4, it was proposed to raise the membership from 12 to 50, "the eventual outcome of said enlarging of our Study Club being the formation of a [chartered] Lodge of Research." The last meeting was held June 1, 1961, with $1.68 and a "drawer full of fine Masonic papers of great value" in the treasury.
The seed, however, had been well planted, and in fertile soil. Three and one-half years later, on January 30, 1965, sixty-four brethren met in Columbus, and the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Edgar L. Ott, read the dispensation which he had issued, opened the first meeting of the Ohio Lodge of Research, and installed its officers.
Our charter was issued by the Grand Lodge of Ohio the following October. Among the charter members were the Grand Master and the Grand Secretary; a review of the list today shows eleven other Past Grand Masters, three Past Grand High Priests, a Past Grand Illustrious Master, a Past Grand Commander, and numerous masonic scholars, among them William G. Peacher and John Black Vrooman. Also represented were members of other well-known Ohio study clubs, such as those in Gallipolis and Sandusky.
Our objectives are to interest and encourage Ohio masons in the study of Freemasonry, to help correct the more egregious and fantastic ideas concerning masonic history which still abound to this day, and to establish and maintain a masonic library.
Under our charter, membership is open to all Master Masons who are members of regularly constituted Lodges subordinate to the Grand Lodge of Ohio or subordinate to or constituents of Grand Lodges with which the Grand Lodge of Ohio is in fraternal relation. Masons are enrolled in one of two membership tiers: Associate and Active. Associate Members participate fully, but only Active Members may vote, chair committees, or hold elective office.

USA - Anniversary Lodge of Research No. 175

Catégorie: Franc-maçonnerie » Loges et Groupes de recherche - Instituts de recherches » Loges et Groupes de recherche
Description:
Anniversary Lodge of Research No. 175
Free and Accepted Masons
Grand Lodge of New Hampshire
Constituted 20 May 1964

About Anniversary Lodge of Research

Research Lodges exist in many jurisdictions. These special-purpose Lodges typically do not work degrees, but accept members through affiliation. They concentrate on the historical and philosophical aspects of the Craft. New Hampshire’s Anniversary Lodge of Research No. 175 was founded in 1964, as part of the celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire in 1789, hence the name and the number 175. The charter members of the Lodge included a number of prominent Masonic historians and writers:

Herbert E. Kimball
Carl A. Buswell
Ralph L. Sloan
Harold O. Cady
Melvin B. Dunbar
Stanley A. Johnson
Robert H. Danelson
Thomas W. Hood
Carroll M. Fogg
Roger E. Hopkins
Raymond A Ellis
Ellis W. Howard
Carroll H. Ingalls
Leslie F. Murch
Harold C. McAllister
George B. Ward

The Lodge has its Annual Meeting and Installation on 8 July, on the anniversary of the founding of our Grand Lodge, at the William Pitt Tavern in Portsmouth’s Strawbery Banke. The Lodge has four additional meetings during the year. Most meetings are visits to other New Hampshire Lodges, where the members typically provide educational programs, but there is an occasional Table Lodge or Ladies at the Table event. Since its founding, Anniversary Lodge has published several volumes of papers by its members, and in 1992, the Lodge assisted in the publication of a book, First American Born: The Life and Journal of Jonathan Belcher, the First-Known American-Born Freemason, by Brother David Crockett of Concord, NH. In 2000. it began the publication of a Quarterly Newsletter.
The by-laws of Anniversary Lodge establish two classes of members. Regular Members, who may vote and hold office, must also be members of a Constituent Lodge in New Hampshire, while Associate Members must be members of Constituent Lodges in jurisdictions in amity with the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire. Today, Anniversary Lodge has over one hundred members, from all over New Hampshire, from the other New England States from other States and Canadian Provinces, and from England and Australia. At this time, membership in Anniversary Lodge does not require the submission of a research paper, although that is certainly encouraged. All members receive the publications of the Lodge, and the publications are also sent to a number of Masonic libraries and similar organizations.
Membership in Anniversary Lodge of Research is particularly recommended for Masons with an interest in the history and philosophy of Masonry. It provides an excellent opportunity to see one’s work in print, to converse with like-minded Masons and to learn about the activities of other Research Lodges.
