The Grand Lodge of the Royal Order of Scotland is headquartered in Edinburgh, with a total of 85 Provincial Grand Lodges in several locations around Britain, and in a number of countries around the world. The order claims the King of Scots as hereditary Grand Master. The Deputy Grand Master and Governor of the order is currently Brother The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Elgin and Kincardine Andrew Douglas Bruce. In times in which there is no King of Scots, the Deputy Grand Master and Governor is the worldwide leader of the Order.
The ROS Grand Lodge and the Provincial Grand Lodges confer two degrees:
Heredom of Kilwinning
Knight of the Rosy Cross
History
The order has existed since at least 1741, based on records in the archive of the Grand Lodge demonstrating activity in London, with a further charter being granted in 1750 to work the degree at The Hague. The holder of that warrant, William Mitchell, moved to Edinburgh around 1752/3, using the charter to establish a Provincial Grand Lodge there. In 1767 this body became the Grand Lodge of the Royal Order of Scotland.
Activity appears to have dwindled with the Order nearing extinction in the early 1800's but a resurgence culminated in the establishment of further Provincial Grand Lodges by 1843.
The traditional history, or legend, of the order dates its origination to the reign of King David I in the 12th Century in the Heredom degree, with the Rosy Cross degree originating in 1314 following the Battle of Bannockburn.

The HFAF is a fraternity for women and organised by women. It was founded in 1913 and membership is open to women of any race or religion, who are able to profess a belief in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies. It is concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ceremonies. Our Order has many Lodges throughout England and the Isle of Man, stretching from as far north as Carlisle and south to Brighton and Bournemouth and westwards in the Cotswolds. We also now have a Lodge in Gibraltar and two in Spain.

The Three Great Principles
For many years Freemasons have followed three great principles:
Brotherly Love - Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures.
Relief - Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.
Truth - Freemasons strive for truth, requiring high moral standards and aiming to achieve them in their own lives.

The Grand Lodge of Ireland is the second oldest in the world and the first evidence for its existence comes from the Dublin Weekly Journal of June 26th 1725. The paper describes an event which took place two days previously on June 24th - a meeting of the Grand Lodge of Ireland to install the new Grand Master, the 1st Earl of Rosse. Unfortunately the exact date of the foundation of the Grand Lodge is not known, but the installation of a new Grand Master would suggest it was already in existence a couple of years. 1725 is the year celebrated in Grand Lodge anniversaries.
Membership is open to all men of integrity and goodwill, irrespective of colour or creed, on condition that they profess a belief in a Supreme Being. How they choose to worship Him is not of interest to us. |

The Order was created to meet a need by senior members coming out of Co-Freemasonry, Le Droit Humain in order to provide a modern organisation for the Millennium. Please note that we have no connection with Le Droit Humain or International Co-Freemasonry as we believe that a belief in a Supreme Being is essential for Masonic work.
It was seen as imperative, to maintain the ancient Landmarks and Principles of Freemasonry, alongside similar Masonic organisations (i.e. singular masculine and singular womens' Masonic Orders in England) and of paramount importance. Yet, being a new vibrant Millennium Masonic Order it offers to men and women the opportunity to work together. |
