International Conference on the History of Freemasonry (ICHF)
The ICHF will provide, for the first time, an international forum for all scholars whose work in any way touches on Freemasonry.
Masonic history is a developing field of academic research and ICHF is intended to stimulate and focus on new research into all aspects of this most interesting area of human activity.
The conference will be held over three days commencing 25th May and ending 27th May 2007.
The conference is supported by the following academic institutions:
The Centre for Research into Freemasonry, University of Sheffield
Centre interdisciplinaire bordelais d'étude des lumières, Université de Bordeaux III
Centre national de la recherche scientifique, Paris IV, Sorbonne
The Interdisciplinary Research Group Freemasonry,
Free University of Brussels
The conference will be held within Freemasons' Hall, George Street, Edinburgh.
About ICHF
ICHF is not a Masonic organisation. The majority of members of the academic committee are not Freemasons and the Conference Organiser, Northern Networking, is headed by Mrs Gill Moore. ICHF is interested in Freemasonry as a an academic subject in its own right.
Many academics across the world have, and continue to, study Freemasonry from a variety of perspectives, for example: social history, philosophy, geography and colonialisation to mention but a few. However, it was appreciated that much of the study of Freemasonry was being conducted in isolation and so it seemed reasonable that an International Conference be organised so that for the first time scholars researching any aspect of Freemasonry could come together. The potential for the sharing of ideas and knowledge is obvious as is the positive benefits which come from networking on an international scale.
The Conference will be held in Freemasons' Hall, Edinburgh, because it is available and is centrally located in the city. Freemasons' Hall is a public building which welcomes visitors from all over the world whether or not they are Freemasons.
